Oil spills are recognized to have dramatic adverse effects on marine animals. The sight of oiled birds arouses our sympathy and pity and stimulates public pressure for safer ships and stricter controls on maritime shipping. Despite some improvements in the technical arena, however, accidents continue to happen, making birds, like other aquatic and semiaquatic animals, still vulnerable to oiling.
